LAWN CARE

ECONO'S COMPLETE LAWN CARE PROGRAM

Our lawn technicians are thoroughly trained in identifying grasses, diseases, and weed types. They make a conscious effort to work with you in obtaining the type of grass that you desire. It is of utmost importance for the homeowner to accept a portion of the responsibility for the upkeep of their turf. The following information is provided to assist you in doing just that. Simply identify the type of grass that you have and read on. Please note, the two types of grass that we have chosen to detail are St. Augustine, and Bahai, the two most commonly used in Southwest Florida.

OUR COMPLETE LAWN CARE SERVICE (ST. AUGUSTINE TURF & BAHIA GRASSES) INCLUDES:

  • Six (6) Applications of Insect Control
  • Two (2) Applications of Dry Fertilizer
  • Broad-Leaf Weed Treatment - Spring & Fall (St. Augustine Grass only)
  • Disease Control - to control Brown Patch and Dollar Spot Fungus
  • Bi-monthly and Annual Plans available.

Bahia Grass

Advantages:

  • Extensive root system makes for drought tolerance.
  • Persists in infertile, dry soil.

Disadvantages:

  • Difficult to mow due to tough leaves and stems.
  • Does not adapt well to soil with high pH and grows poorly in areas subject to salt spray.
  • May appear yellow in Spring and Fall due to lack of iron.
  • Low tolerance to herbicides making weed control difficult.
  • Tall seed heads from May through November may be aesthetically objectionable.
  • If Mole Crickets attack root system no chemical control is available.

Maintenance:

Fertilizer:

  • Recommend two applications per year of complete fertilizer.

Mowing:

  • Mow every 7 to 14 days, maintaining a height of 3". Best to cut when length of blade is 4" to 4 ½".
  • Must use heavy duty rotary mower blade due to tough leaves. If blade is not sharp the cut will be ragged causing a visual dull, grey color.

Watering:

  • Best if done on as needed basis, being sure to use the proper amount of water, 3/4" per application. Best to wait until blades show slight signs of wilt.
  • Bahia grass has the best tolerance to drought and will recover soon after rain or irrigation.
  • Over watering encourages shallow root growth, weakening turf and causing disease and weed invasion.

Insects:

  • Mole Crickets may burrow in soil damaging the root system and causing rapid wilting.

Diseases:

  • Bahai grass is susceptible to Dollar Spot Fungus, which appears as spots scattered across turf, several inches in diameter. After the grass is treated it will outgrow the symptoms without permanent damage

St. Augustine Grass

Advantages:

  • Excellent salt and shade tolerance.
  • Turf is dark to blue-green and dense, adapted to most soils and climatic regions of Florida.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires irrigation and does not remain green during drought without water.
  • Accumulates excessive thatch build-up under moderate to high fertility and frequent irrigation.
  • Wears poorly and some varieties are susceptible to cold damage.
  • Major pest is the Chinch Bug. However, Floratam and Flora-Lawn are resistant.

Maintenance:

Fertilizer:

  • For minimal maintenance a low fertility program with two complete fertilizations per year is recommended one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Only fertilize more to encourage rapid coverage for newly sprigged or sodded lawns.

Mowing:

  • Mow to at least 3" as needed. Best results are achieved if blades of grass are 4" to 4 ½" before mowing.
  • Use only sharp, balanced mower lade or recovery period of grass will be extended and lawn will have a lower aesthetic quality.
  • It is best to return clippings to lawn after mowing.

Watering:

  • Water when turf begins to wilt, turns blue-grey in color, and or recovery from tracks is slow.
  • Excessive thatch develops from over fertilization, over watering, and improper mowing.
